Playful and raw, yet intimate and thoughtful — that is WHYBE. This alternative indie band moves effortlessly between these contrasting elements, creating songs that leave a lasting impression on their audience. From acoustic, restrained folk songs to uninhibited, blues-infused tracks that move like a freight train, WHYBE constantly keeps you guessing. For the audience, the chemistry between the band members on stage is impossible to miss. They radiate a genuine sense of camaraderie and joy while playing, strengthening their ability to convey the mystical and emotional forces already embedded in their songs. Frontman Wybe Zijlstra started WHYBE as a singer-songwriter, releasing two EPs, WHYBE (2017) and Under The Truth (2019), as well as several singles accompanied by music videos. In 2019, he was selected for Popronde, performing across the Netherlands and receiving widespread positive feedback. In 2023 he was selected for the Mentos Grote Prijs van Nederland. He has also delivered impressive performances at venues and festivals such as Maifeld Derby, Festival Bruis, Mannheimer Brückenaward and Openluchttheater Valkenburg. But Wybe wanted to take things further. He formed a band to create a fuller sound and, together with the band, recorded his debut album Bonfire for a Butterfly (2024). For more than a year, he and his band worked intensively on the record in a fully analogue studio, in close collaboration with drummer and producer Lucas Kramer. The result was a significant step forward in his music, while retaining the distinctive acoustic intimacy that defined him as an alternative singer-songwriter. After Ice On My Soul, a single from the album, was played on Radio 2, the station's DJs described WHYBE as “the best-kept musical secret in the Netherlands.” A new album is on the way. A new band has taken shape, and along the way, WHYBE has evolved from a singer-songwriter project into a fully-fledged band. The five members are currently working on their new album, expected to release in 2027.
