Playful and raw, yet intimate and introspective — WHYBE thrives on the tension between these extremes. The Maastricht-based alternative indie band moves effortlessly between stripped-back, acoustic folk songs and unruly, blues-driven tracks that roll like a freight train. WHYBE is currently working on their second studio album, with one central ambition: to capture the feeling of their live shows on tape. In a digital age defined by speed, perfection and constant stimulation, the band deliberately takes the opposite approach. The album is being recorded live, embracing the imperfections that come with it — the squeaks, the creaks, the small mistakes. Nothing is polished away simply for the sake of perfection. Because those imperfections are part of what makes the music human. Recorded entirely by the band themselves in their hometown of Maastricht, the album is being shaped at their own pace and on their own terms. The songs explore a broad spectrum of emotions, allowing moments of tenderness, darkness, tension and release to exist side by side. By recording together live, WHYBE aims to capture those emotions as they happen, rather than reconstructing them afterwards. In 2024, WHYBE released their debut album Bonfire for a Butterfly, which received airplay on Dutch national radio station Radio 2. Its accompanying music videos further highlighted the band’s raw emotional character and distinctive alternative aesthetic. Over the years, WHYBE has performed at festivals and venues including Maifeld Derby, Zero For Three Fest, Openluchttheater Valkenburg and Mannheimer Brückenaward. From intimacy to intensity, WHYBE is a band that leaves room for the unexpected.
